TMESIS THEATRE
Who: Tmesis Theatre
When: Summer 2024 & Jul 2025
Work:
During the summers of 2023 and 2024, and in July 2025, I collaborated with Tmesis Theatre to support their productions in Portugal. In 2023, I acted as a liaison between the company in Liverpool, UK, and local partners including the Município de Mondim de Basto and Favo das Artes, facilitating an 8-day artistic residency in a remote location in Mondim where the company developed the production Sealskin.
In 2024 and 2025, I provided production support for the performances, assisting with logistics including set management, catering, marketing, and transportation. My role ensured that the company could focus on artistic creation while all operational aspects ran smoothly.
This work involved project coordination, cross-border collaboration, and hands-on production management, contributing to the successful staging of Tmesis Theatre’s immersive and complex productions in Portugal.
Project Description – “Tmesis Theatre" & "Sealskin"
Tmesis Theatre is a physical theatre company based in Liverpool, founded in 2003. Renowned for its bold and imaginative productions, the company combines movement, puppetry, live music, and visual storytelling to create powerful performances that are playful, emotional, and thought-provoking. Their repertoire includes acclaimed works such as Wolf Red, Beyond Belief, Memoria, and Wicked Women.
In addition to touring nationally and internationally, Tmesis Theatre leads Physical Fest, Liverpool’s international festival of physical theatre. The festival brings together world-class artists, workshops, and performances, providing a unique platform for participation, creativity, and training in the field.
The company also runs the Tmesis Training Company, offering emerging performers high-quality training and opportunities to devise, collaborate, and showcase their work. Through performance, festivals, and education, Tmesis Theatre continues to inspire audiences and support the next generation of theatre-makers.
Sealskin is a physical theatre production by Tmesis Theatre, inspired by the Selkie myth from Celtic folklore. The story follows the journey of a woman caught between two worlds—land and sea—as she struggles with themes of freedom, identity, love, and loss.
Through a striking combination of movement, visual storytelling, and live performance, Sealskin creates a dreamlike and emotional atmosphere that explores what it means to belong and the sacrifices tied to love and desire. The production blends physical theatre with poetic imagery, immersing audiences in a narrative that is both mythical and deeply human.
Presented across various venues, Sealskin reflects Tmesis Theatre’s signature style of powerful, non-verbal storytelling and their commitment to creating theatre that resonates emotionally while celebrating the possibilities of the body in performance.
